What are Baseball Canada's pitch count rules?

Baseball Canada's pitch count rules, called Arm Smart, set a daily maximum for each age division and required rest days based on how many pitches were thrown in a day. Rest starts the next calendar day. These rules apply to league play, playoffs, tournaments and championships, and some provinces add stricter limits on top.

Other rules in the same section

  • A pitcher may finish the batter when reaching a threshold or the daily maximum, and the threshold figure, not the actual count, is recorded.
  • Three consecutive days are allowed only if the first two days combined stay under 25 (11U), 30 (13U), 35 (15U/16U), 40 (18U) or 45 (21U/22U) pitches. Four consecutive days are never allowed.
  • Two appearances in one day are allowed if the first stayed under the first threshold; the two-day total may not exceed the daily maximum.
  • A pitcher who pitches cannot catch for the rest of that day.
  • Intentional-walk automatic balls don't count. Pitches after midnight count as the previous day.
  • A player pitching in an older division follows the rules of their own, lower division.
  • Violations: the head coach is ejected and suspended for an additional game.

Championship additions

Baseball Canada's championship regulations add two-day and four-day combined limits. The four-day maximums used in recent editions are 105 (11U), 120 (13U), 135 (15U/16U), 150 (18U, Canada Cup, Canada Games) and 165 (21U/22U). Check the current year's Rules & Regulations for Baseball Canada Championships at baseball.ca, since these are updated annually.

Provincial differences

Provinces publish their own charts, which can be stricter. Baseball Alberta uses lower consecutive-day thresholds for league play than for provincials. Baseball Saskatchewan runs a lower chart before June 1. Always check your provincial association's current table.

How this compares to Pitch Smart

USA Baseball's Pitch Smart guidelines, used by most US programs, use the same shape with different numbers; for example 13 to 14 year olds reach 4 days of rest at 66 pitches, where Baseball Canada's 13U reaches it at 76. Programs with players on both sides of the border should track to the stricter rule that applies on the day.

Common questions

When does rest start?

The next calendar day at 12:01 a.m., and each day of rest is a full calendar day.

Can a pitcher finish the batter at the daily maximum?

Yes, and must then be replaced. The maximum figure is what's recorded.

Do bullpen pitches count toward these limits?

No. The rules cover game pitches. Many programs record bullpens anyway for workload.

What happens if the count is exceeded?

The head coach is ejected from that game and suspended for the next one.
